Easy Street
Easy Street takes the fear out of living and gives you the confidence you need to face the world
Sustaining a brain injury is something you don’t think about . . . . until it happens to you or a loved one. An injury, an illness, an injury sustained at home, on skis, in a car . . . . these are all very real possibilities with very real outcomes.
The clients that come through the doors at URSA weren't expecting a life-altering situation to occur. They are ordinary people, just like you and me. They are fathers and sisters, mothers and friends. Husbands and wives and children – all changed forever, in an instant.
Living with a brain injury changes everything. Daily living takes on an entirely new meaning. Running errands and completing your chores - things you once took for granted - are no longer just simple tasks. They now require concentration, planning ahead and strategic thinking. They require learning new skills and re-learning old ones.
Easy Street – the road to independence
Easy Street was designed to help with just that - to assist you on your road to independence. Help in incorporating skills for everyday living into the rehabilitation process. Not just general skills but specific training geared toward every day life.
Easy Street is a life-sized replica of a city street, complete with shops, vehicles and a bank. Clients learn how to maneuver obstacles such as curbs, steps, turnstiles, doorways and ramps. In addition, a number of walking surfaces are represented. Brick, concrete, tile and carpet – all used to teach the client how to negotiate and move through various challenges and complicated situations.
In a safe and secure environment, individuals are offered an opportunity to practice everyday skills. These skills are needed to navigate their way through basic community settings. Shopping for groceries, depositing a cheque, getting on a bus, dining at a restaurant. With an authentic representation of real-life situations, clients can be assessed on their skill-level and given the opportunity to improve upon their abilities.
The goal of Easy Street is a defined one. URSA’s hope is that each and every individual re-gains their independence. That they have a chance to apply their skills in their homes and in their communities. Together with the individual and the team at URSA, each client is guided toward maximizing their self-sufficiency and making a seamless transition back into society.
Everyone has the right to live their life to the fullest. URSA believes this down to their core. It’s the foundation on which we operate. Easy Street is designed to help you regain your skills and your independence. Freedom and self-reliance you used to have, you will have again someday soon.
